Sir Steven Runciman's three volume A History of the Crusades, one of the great classics of English historical writing, is now being reissued. Volume I deals completely with the First Crusade and the foundation of the kingdom of Jerusalem. Volume II describes the Frankish states of Outremer from the accession of King Baldwin I to the re-conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin, and...more

Narrative three volume history of crusades to the Holy Land and the Crusader Kingdoms (well largely the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem)(view spoiler)[ because markedly less is known about the county of Tripoli, the Principality of Antioch or the County of Edessa (hide spoiler)]. It's easy to read, approachable and at first highly detailed. However the author gets noticeably tired of the subject and lacking in empathy by the third volume, doesn't really engage critically with the source material and,...more

Recommends it for: Readers with time on their hands and extensive background reading in the area.
Although Steven Runciman's three volume 'History of the Crusades' is a true masterpiece of historical writing I do not recommend it for anyone who has not already read extensively in the area. It takes a great deal of time to read the work in its entirety and its rigorous focus on dynastic intrigues is mind numbing for any normal reader. A much better book to begin with is Christopher Tyerman's 'God's War' which has the great virtue of covering the crusades in Southern France, the Baltic and Spai...more

This three-volume set is an exemplary history, full of the incident and hundreds (thousands) of persons (all carefully indexed) who comprise the events of two and half centuries. Sir Steven is not a 'thesis' historian, although he does not hesitate to make final conclusions of great insight and soundness. His strength lies in his meticulous detail and objectivity, recounting the errors and virtues of all the players, on all sides, with great wisdom and impartiality. He shows that the Crusades we...more

Recommends it for: People who are interested in the era of the Crusades and are not satisfied by some weird TV-shows
Let's be honest: Steven Runcimann's A History of the Crusades is not only a book about a certain part of history. This big, big monster of a book is worth a LEXICON on this topic and is as comprehensive as it can get. Yet it is absolutely not just a huge load of information, dates and names. It is a very enjoyable read - I myself read it on the bus towards the university. For fun. I would heartily recommend this incredibly informative and very exciting, well-written text to people who are intere...more

Classic history of the Crusades, great literary quality, though rather dated scientifically.

Very good and interesting in the first half, but then loses itself in too many details. Absolutely confusing with all the people playing a role (too many minor roles mentioned). I wish it had some family trees. If I could choose again, I would go for something more compact. The Gterman translation was not revised and Peter de Mendelssohn ALWAYS gets phrases with 'some' + a numeral wrong. He obviously didn't think this one through. Although his translation is mostly very good.
Runciman is always a pleasure to read. Perhaps his prose can dip occasionally into exaggeration, and he is a bit Franco-centric in his narrative - but damn, is it fun to read. A bit outdated, but an excellent piece for a mid-to beginner-level history of the Crusades.

The Concise History Of The Crusades Pdf
A King's Scholar at Eton College, he was an exact contemporary and close friend of George Orwell. While there, they both studied French under Aldous Huxley. In 1921 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge as a history scholar and studied under J.B. Bury, becoming, as Runciman later commented, 'his first, and only, student.' At first the reclusive Bury tried to brush him off; then, when Runciman ment...more
